I’ve seen users run into fatal errors when installing or updating the Docy WordPress theme, especially when a child theme is involved. In this post, I’ll walk through the troubleshooting process, explain the folder-naming issue behind the problem, and share the fix that gets the theme setup working again.
In some cases, especially on modern WordPress installs running PHP 7.4 or later, the issue can show up as a fatal error that makes the front end unreachable as soon as the site loads.
This issue usually comes down to how WordPress identifies the parent theme directory. The child theme is set up to look for a parent folder named exactly docy inside wp-content/themes/. If the parent theme folder has a different name—often because the folder includes a version number—the child theme can’t find what it needs, and that leads to deactivation or errors even when the theme files are actually there.

To fix this, make sure the installed parent theme folder is named exactly docy. If you’re uploading or reinstalling the theme manually, here’s the process I’d follow:
.zip
docy.zip
WordPress child themes define their parent dependency through the Template header in the style.css file, such as Template: docy. That name has to match the parent theme folder on the server exactly. If the folder name doesn’t match, WordPress can’t connect the child theme to the parent files and assets.

Template: docy
If the Docy child theme won’t activate or starts throwing errors after an update, the first thing I’d check is the parent theme folder name. Renaming the folder to docy usually clears up the dependency issue and brings the site back to normal.
If you’re still stuck after that, share the exact error logs and environment details so the issue can be checked more closely.
